How to pack for a weekend away

Welcome to the first on many answers to life's dilemmas.

Ask Auntie Betty will provide you daily with everything you have ever needed to know, and things you didn't even know you needed.

Here is the most common problem I get asked about, Phillip and I have often taken a weekend in the country, so I shall pass on my very best advice on this important topic for any young woman.

Packing for a weekend away can easily be the biggest nightmare, and get that romantic break off to the most dire of starts.

Tip 1 You only need clean pants

As my mother used to say, clean underwear is all you need. And that is true, if you think of the least you could cope with and build up, then over-packing will never be a problem again!

What is the least you could live with? A toothbrush and clean pants? Then start with the bare essentials and add in extras. Unless you are off for a weekend hiking in Peru then you will never be far from a shop stocking every essential.

Tip 2 Smaller is better

Small bag = less to carry and more far chic. What is chic and sexy about looking sweaty and high maintenance! Looking in control, chic and organised is always Bettys’ aim.

The best advice I was even given was to lay out everything you intend to take and remove anything that doesn't co-ordinate with the rest and needs its own matching shoes, bag, coat and hair.

No, I’m not saying pack all beige, but remember an LBD is your friend. The less you pack the more time you’ll spend getting ready which in turn leads to more time doing the fun stuff on your weekend....

Tip 3 Don’t be sensible

Multi-purpose clothes never created a stirring in anyones loins. Yes those trousers may dry in a flash and match that fleece, but god do you look like a Geography teacher!

There is no shame in looking fabulous. Your clothes are to be worn, so wear your best every day.

Failing that, find a man with a bigger car to carry it all.
